Prozach92: Day 24 (Shrinkage) Sometimes I just want to wear what’s in the dryer so bad that I crank up the heat to speed up the process. Unfortunately this leaves me with a dog sized version of my favorite sweater. My thought process is shockingly similar, I try to crank out a reflection and then I’m stuck sitting naked while my dog enjoys some comfortable new clothing. prozach92 #365.25daysofphotos #yearofadventure #365daysofphotos #365dayschallenge #antigua #guatemala #laundry #shrinkage

Applestogo: January 20th: Antigua We climbed our first volcano! The shuttle there and back was the scariest part. On our way up we met a chatty woman from Chicago who took tons of pics for us. After grabbing lunch we checked out a huge convent that had been turned into a hotel, complete with multiple museums and a wedding set up in progress.

Jellyspls: All y’all are talking about your favorite celebrities going to Africa for charity. While in Guatemala people are living in dumps; looking through trash for food and anything they can sell. And yet till this day I haven’t seen one person make a post about Guatemala’s poverty.

Bad news never really has a way of revealing itself with grace or tact. When we find out something we would rather not know, it is easy to try and burn every trace of the unpleasant information. The thing is, the bad news never actually goes away but rather it changes form and must be dealt with in a new way that may not be as simple. Collecting the scattered ashes is far more difficult than burning the thing in the first place.

Day 1 of 365.25 Days of Photos:

New Year, New You! This is a common phrase I find slipping out of my mouth near the beginning and end of each year. More often than not as a sarcastic quip, or word vomit, there is not much of a difference. As I look back on what has made me who I am, I realize that it has always been non-linear and not the result of a “Better You in 10 Days!” program. These changes have come from more than a fair amount of reflection, triumph, heart ache, and simply put, stupid mistakes.

As I embark on this journey I have but one goal with this blog and that is to post a photo everyday for the next 365.25 days. This is the simple task taking place to prepare me for the changes that 2015 (more specifically everyday) will bring. We are not the same as we were when we woke up 16, 10, or 5 hours ago, so why is it that it takes the end or beginning of a new year to take the time to reflect on this? The posts may not always have a reflection or whatever, but the main goal is consistency. I like to view my life as an adventure. This could justify, for some, seeing life as something more than a series of random events.

The changing of the calendar serves as an objective starting point for human growth and flourishing supposedly. I do not see this as a resolution but rather something to guide my reflection on life as it unfolds before me.

I do not know if anyone will read this. If you are reading this, I welcome you to my adventure and hope you enjoy the ride as much as I will!

Searching for Sun at Midnight

https://www.flickr.com/photos/94843326@N03/sets/72157650057778741/

Hope makes no sense. But that is what constitutes hope! Why would it make sense to believe that things would get better if all seems lost? My friend’s father used this phrase today and I couldn’t help but get stuck on it for some time. The context of the comment was not of great depth but its implications are so important. Sunlight does exist…unless you live in Seattle…haha…oh I’m not funny. I would say that hope is part of our human condition. Of course we have heard the cliché “It is always darkest before the dawn” but the important part of that phrase is the mere existence of dawn. We search for the sun at midnight because we just can’t wait to feel the warmth of its rays. Its appearance is inevitable but it is easy to let our imaginations take control when there is nothing but darkness. Our minds fill in the shadows with our fears. The sun of course shows the darkness for what it is, simply the absence of light. Where does that leave us? Despair is the lack of ability allow the light to fill in our own shadows. Hope, however, is searching for sun at midnight.

Day 4 (Rubbish: A Portrait):

Snow is great, especially if you are a ninja or a spy who is hoping to cover their tracks. The only problem is the snow is simply covering the deeper impression of the persons foot on the earth, not erasing them. When the snow melts the slushy mess will be that much harder to live with as it fills the footprints and and your boots turning them into grey 7/11 slurpies. What is covered in snow is never really repaired until the spring. The answer then is simply to prepare for the snow as best as possible.

#brokenfilters:

image

https://www.flickr.com/photos/94843326@N03/16005894937/in/set-72157650057778741

This is more of a photo for documentation rather than artistic creation…

When I got my lens in the mail I was met with a broken UV filter made of some of the thickest glass I’ve ever seen…exaggeration. My first response was to dispose of the broken mess and buy a new one immediately afterwards. I hated the fact that it was broken. It actually made me more than a little angry to see the utter brokenness of this lens filter. It was strange but I could not stand to look at it. As I cleaned the mess I tried my hardest to avoid getting cut by the shards of glass. I feel this is how we are as human beings. We don’t want people to see brokenness because we can’t even look at our own brokenness. Unfortunately we can’t just go to the store and purchase a new us. We simply have to pick up the pieces as gently as we can. The hurt doesn’t end after the initial break. Those who are left to pick up the pieces might slice their hand from the jagged edges. So what are we left with? We are left with opportunity to learn how to take greater care when picking up the pieces of a broken person while also acknowledging our own vulnerability that is necessary in the process. It is a willingness to be hurt together.
