Burnedshoes: © Rodrigo Abd, Nov. 1, 2011, Zunil / Guatemala A boy flies a kite in the cemetery on Day of the Dead in Zunil, Guatemala. Mayans believe the dead are allowed to visit their families on earth for one day. Family members fly kites to guide their departed relatives to their earthly homes. Decorating graves with fresh flowers is common throughout Latin America, as is having a picnic at the departed relative’s grave site.

Skysetsail: My first visit to Zunil, a town to the southeast of Xela, where I will be working. This is the view from the cemetery at the top of the town. Zunil is located along the Rio Samala between some of the mountains, with a view of Volcan Santa Maria in the back. The Rio Samala is one of the most polluted rivers in Central America due to lack of adequate sewage and garbage disposal. The area is very disaster prone due to flooding of the Samala and landslides caused by heavy rain on the steep deforested topography. I will be working with Ramon, in one of these pictures, on some adaptation and mitigation strategies for these issues. It’s expected to be exasperated by climate change; the effects are already being felt in this area. In the background a funeral was taking place, featuring a full band. It seemed almost merry.

FROM PARKS TO PARKS:

From one of America’s greatest women (Rosa Parks; see previous post) to one of America’s greatest men (& one of my favourite photographers):

Gordon Parks would have turned 100 this November 30. He was one of the seminal figures of twentieth century photography. A humanitarian with a deep commitment to social justice, he left behind a body of work that documents many of the most important aspects of American culture from the early 1940s up until his death in 2006, with a focus on race relations, poverty, Civil Rights, and urban life.

To honor this wonderful artist I will present a lot of his work & stories about him in the next days, I hope you enjoy it!

"I’ve been asked if I think there will ever come a time when all people come together. I would like to think there will. All we can do is hope and dream and work toward that end. And that’s what I’ve tried to do all my life." (Gordon Parks)

SUCH A BEAUTIFUL, SUNSHINY DAY:

I had such a wonderful day yesterday! Vienna Photo Book Festival at Galerie Anzenberger, meeting & chatting with Klaus Pichler (thanks for the book!), buying Anders Petersen's 'Du mich auch' from a lovely lady from Denmark (incl. one of my favourite photographs; that’s also the one the lady chose to pose with when I asked to take her picture, more about that later).

Finally picking up Jak Tuggener's breathtaking book 'Fabrik' from the 5Uhr30 booth (thanks to the lady with pity for the poor), a long time favourite, and finally running into Andreas H. Bitesnich who I didn’t recognize (I guess I’m better at recognizing his photographs). Thanks for the lovely chat Andreas, I can’t wait to see your book collection in, how I already call it, ‘the treasure-house’!

After that I had a great evening in the sun with fantastic open air music, friends, chats, laughter, dog, coffee, drinks, an adventure, dinner (I like my adventures before dinner)… if someone asked me to describe my perfect day, well I guess yesterday would get very close to that description, only a few things missing, as always :) but that’s life and that’s what I love about it, don’t you, too? things to wait for - such things are rare these days. I guess…

I’ll write about Klaus Pichler's new, great book, 'Skeletons in the Closet’, soon - stay tuned! Yours trully, Burnéd

BLOG AFIRE - My Tumblr story:

When you take a look at my Tumblr archive you might think that I started this blog on Jan. 1, 2011, but in fact it was Jan. 20, 2011 (btw: I missed my first Tumblr birthday - but, as in real life, I don’t care too much about birthdays, so what). I predated my first post (Artist’s shit) for a certain reason, but before I reveal this “secret” I want to tell you a little story:

Until the end of January 2011, I used my private Facebook wall to “save” interesting links I didn’t want to be lost in my browsers bookmark maze. One day I wanted to check some stuff I posted there a long time ago, but I had to realize that Facebook tends to delete old posts regularly (especially when “improving” the system again). The stuff I was looking for had disappeared on Facebooks servers where it will remain happily ever after.

That’s why I started looking for an easy-to-use blog platform that could work as a reliable “storage” for stuff I didn’t want to forget about, without being interested in sharing posts with other people at first. That was also the reason why I had no problem with predating my first post (a deadly sin for bloggers?) which I also shared on my Facebook wall before the blog was born: I wanted to know when exactly I found out about this link. Don’t ask why, I just thought it may be of importance to me one day. No matter what, I still use this predating possibility from time to time to rearrange posts on my blog just to put photographs in a “right”, visually appealing order. I guess you have to live with that, burn down the walls that say YOU CAN’T and stuff…

The last months on Tumblr were just great: I met a lot of interesting people (I won’t give any names because I’m afraid that I could forget some of you guys who make my dashboard an inspiration source and my inbox a slow-motion chat with friends, but I guess you know who you are), I found photos by and information on so many amazing photographers/artists, and I had a lot of fun with you guys, thanks for that!

Tumblr helped my broaden my horizon in so many ways. Dear Tumblr team: please keep up your excellent work in the future, I appreciate it a lot!

Many thanks go also to my followers who are really interested in the content I provide! I’m very happy to read comments on my posts, or to see other reactions, e.g. that people visit exhibitions because they found out about them on my blog - how great is that?! And to the followers who are hoping for a re-follow: hope dies last. Don’t be angry, I just can’t follow all of you. If you think that I absolutely have to follow your blog (because you post original, well researched, inspiring stuff at a bearable extent) just drop me a short note and I will definitely take a look!

All the best,
Burnéd Shoés
